Abstract:

Severe thunderstorms developed during the afternoon and evening over central and eastern Victoria on 6 April 1994. An area in Warragul suffered greatly with the swathe of damage confined almost exclusively to an area 4 km long by 50 metres wide. Meteorological analysis showed a relatively warm and moist boundary layer over central and eastern parts of Victoria that day. A well defined confluence line extended from the Latrobe Valley to the southeastern suburbs of Melbourne during the afternoon. A Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) value of 2839 J/kg was obtained for a modified pre-storm sounding for the Warragul area. A pre-storm hodograph for Gippsland showed large vertical wind shear was present in the atmosphere and a large helicity (434 m2/s2) resulted when using the Warragul storm motion. Combining the above factors with interpretation of the storm damage and of colour radar imagery from the Silicon Graphics radar workstation leads to the conclusion that a tornado was responsible for the damage at Warragul. A severe thunderstorm climatology indicates that this is only the third report of a tornado in Victoria during April.
