Abstract:

Photocopies of letters and documents relating to the Civil War service of a captain in the Minnesota Infantry, 1st Regiment, Company D. Includes Smith's appointment as a captain (Aug. 6, 1861); a resolution of praise of Smith from the members of his company (Jan. 14, 1862); a letter from Ignatius Donnelly to General Stephen Miller in support of Smith (Aug., 1863); and two letters of condolence to Smith's wife from Governor Stephen Miller (Nove. 25, Dec. 25, 1864).

Smith resigned his commission on Oct. 7, 1863 because of a disability and was transferred to Company G as paymaster. He was killed by guerrillas in Novmeber, 1864.
