Abstract:
Swift's diary begins with recording President Buchanan's proclamation making January 4, 1861, a day of fasting and prayer throughout the United States, asking God to subdue to secession movement.
The diaries document his movements from New York to Philadelphia to Baltimore, Washington, and Fort Monroe. He writes about family matters and Army life.
