Diaries and notebooks kept by Jean Paul Richter and his wife, Luise Marie Richter. Many of these volumes were kept during travels in Italy. Topics chiefly cover Jean Paul Richter's work in the field of art history and criticism, particularly of Italian art; the Bibliotheca Hertziana, with which Jean Paul Richter was associated; and purchases of art works by the Richters. There are also many references to other scholars, including the couple's daughters, Gisela, an archaeologist, and Irma, an art historian also. One of the notebooks contains small sketches of art works illustrating the critical text.
