He writes of his work as cashier for Howland and Aspinwall, matters of interest to the firm, fellow employees, business and social activities of his employers (William and John Aspinwall, and Gardiner and Samuel Howland), his friends and relatives, prominent people he meets, news from his friends Cunningham Drake and James L. Graham who are living in Europe, arrivals and departures of ships, numbers of people buying passage to California during the Gold Rush, social activities and public entertainments in New York, and activities of his father, Nathan Burr Graham, Jr., including his stay in Washington during the inauguraton of Zachary Taylor as president.
