Scholars will find this resource indispensable as a tool for performing research on major biblical interpreters. It covers immensely the entirety of church history, beginning with the early church and concluding with recent interpreters of the post-modern era. The format offers a bibliography for each major interpreter as well as a study of what the interpreter contributed to interpretation. Moreover, the introductory articles on major interpretations provide a framework for how the parts of each contributor fit into the whole of biblical interpretation. Such a work will be significant for New Testament interpretation as it guides students through the historical framework of interpreters who preceded them and gives them time-saving access to their resources and presuppositions.

With over two hundred in-depth articles, the Dictionary of Major Biblical Interpreters introduces readers to the principal players in that history: their historical and intellectual contexts, their primary works, their interpretive principles and their broader historical significance. In addition, six major essays offer an overview of the history of biblical interpretation from the second century to the present. This one-volume reference, a revised and vastly expanded edition of InterVarsityPress's Historical Handbook of Major Biblical Interpreters, will serve as an invaluable tool for any serious student of the Bible and the history of biblical interpretation."--Jacket." ;
