Abstract:

The author has written several books on India and the Middle East and brings a global, rather than American perspective to the subject. He focuses on the "core" countries: Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the U.A.E., and the Palestinian territories. The scope of the work includes political and military history, religion, country profiles, ethnic groups and government and politics, language and literature, issues related to oil and gas production and markets, ideologies, places, and twentieth century biographies and treaty information. There is an index to supplement the dictionary arrangement. The ten maps, eight sharing only two pages are sufficient, but the strengths of the book greatly outweigh this shortcoming. Highly recommended for high school collections.
