Abstract:

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Zoegirl: Chrissy, Alisa, Kristin (vocals). Producers: Robert Marvin, Damon Riley, Lynn Nichols, Tedd T. Even though Christian bands from Kings X to MxPx long ago figured out how to rock convin cingly, it's rare for faith-based based music to actually be sexy. Zoegirl, however, pulls off the seemingly impossibl e by packing DIFFERENT KIND OF FREE with enough seductive warbling and booty-shakin' grooves to make Britney blush.

In addition, this time around, the trio stakes a serious claim in Michelle Branch/Avril Lavigne cool alterna-girl territory by adding giant-sounding guitars and a thundering rhythm section that's more Aerosmith than Amy Grant. (The group even cops the riff from the Who's "Can't Explain" for "Feel Alright.").

That said, Zoegirl is still a CCM band and, though the members play down their Christian mission on many songs, "Life to Me," a sweeping, passionately performed ballad, is, perhaps not coincidentally, both the album's best and most overtly religious track. Thoroughly modern, chock full of h ooks, and expertly produced, DIFFERENT KIND OF FREE should appeal both to listeners looking for a higher power and a powerful pure pop high.
