Abstract:

"Recognizing that the need for awareness and increased responsibility is [i.e. in] broadcasting is growing even more important today as we approach the space age, the station has attempted to meet the need by its continuous programming in the public interest."--1958 Peabody Digest. In this episode of "Dimensions," Dr. Pettigrew reviews the perspectives from which prejudice should be examined. Guest Oscar Handlin gives a history of prejudice in the United States.

Sol Kolach of B'Nai Brith discusses the Temple bombing in Atlanta and other manifestations of bigotry, and explains his group's work against prejudice. Handlin and Kolach agree that education can help dispell prejudice. Includes footage of the bombed temple in Atlanta; interviews with white men and women who are angry that a black family has moved into their Levittown, Pa. neighborhood; and an excerpt from "An American Girl," a film produced by the Anti-defamation League of B'nai Brith in which a mother tells her daughter's friend to stay away because she is Jewish.
