Abstract:

The archives of this important nineteenth and twentieth century British publisher is dominated by correspondence between the two principals, Otto Kyllmann and Michael Sadleir, and the stable of American and British writers under contract. The letters number over 10,000, along with corrected proofs, typescripts, legal documents, and financial records.

The author correspondence files include extensive correspondence from Walter De la Mare, James T. Farrell, and Logan Pearsall Smith, along with the correspondence of some 400 additional writers. The correspondence documents the censorship battles fought over Farrell's "Studs Lonigan" and Dreiser's "Sister Carrie," as well as the libel suit brought against Nina Hamnett for "Laughing Torso." These letters provide insight into the sometimes contentious relationship between author and publisher.

Prominent correspondents include Richard Aldington, Sir Henry Lancelot Aubrey-Fletcher, Vernon Bartlett, Hilaire Belloc, Gordon Bottomley, John Dos Passos, Havelock Ellis, Bradda Field, Philip Guedalla, Patrick Hamilton, Nina Hamnett, Paul Horgan, Margaret Jameson, Robert Keable, Bruce Marshall, John Middleton Murray, Sir Harold George Nicolson, Naomi Royde-Smith, Damon Runyon, and George Santayana. This collection had originally been under the provenance of the Hydes, the last owners of Constable & Co., and they removed some files before Temple acquired the collection. The correspondence of individual authors is linked to this record and detailed individual records can be retrieved by searching "fin tw Constable Correspondence."
