Permit files relate to civil engineering projects proposed by corporations, state and local governments, private individuals, and others. These files include permits granted, correspondence, and information on the design and construction of railroad and highway bridges, dams and hydroelectric projects, booms, wharves, docks, power lines, cable ferries, and other projects in and across rivers in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. Project maps and accompanying project summary sheets give information about river and harbor flood control projects in Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan, including projects on the shores of Lake Superior.
Microfilmed records of the district engineer include letterpress books, records of hearings, clippings, affidavits, and other papers pertaining to an attempt by persons and organizations in northern Minnesota to persuade the U.S. government to abandon or modify the operation of flood-control reservoirs built on the upper Mississippi River, and to the investigation by a specially appointed Board of Engineers of flood damages attributed to the reservoirs.
