Abstract:

The health of the dusky dolphins off the coast of New Zealand's Kaikoura peninsula means a lot to biologist Tim Markowitz. Tim knows that healthy dusky dolphins indicate a healthy ocean. And that's good for the area's all-important tourism industry: more than 180 visitors each day are drawn to the Kaikoura region to swim with the dolphins. Tim's mission is to determine as much as possible about the dolphins - their population size, seasonal distribution, and response to human activities. The more he and his associates discover, the easier it will be to take the appropriate measures to protect this beautiful and charismatic species.
