Abstract:

This film concerns a Palestinian named E. S. (played in utter silence with Keatonesque melancholy by director Suleiman) who observes the petty, hilariously repetitive neighbor-to-neighbor grievances of a community of middle-class Nazarenes. His father drives through the mostly Arab Israeli city, smiling and waving to his neighbors as he curses them under his breath. The Jerusalem dwelling son meets his Ramallah based lover in an empty lot near an Israeli checkpoint on the road between the two cities. There they hold hands, sorrowfully watching the young, anxious Israeli soldiers go about their work. The film chronicles the absurdities of life and love on both sides of the Palestinian-Israeli border, in satirical sections linked by the hero's suffering and the director"s cool, observant camera.
