Francine Harper is mad!! She just found her new husband, Dwayne, in the arms of his ex-Carla, a known floozy and Francine grabs a gun and tries to shoot first and ask questions later! She gets arrested, but luckily both Dwayne and Carla survive and from that moment, the action doesn’t stop. This book takes many twists and turns as Francine discovers Dwayne might be involved with the Georgia mafia, money-laundering, political office buying, there’s even a topless barbershop thrown in for good measure! The result is a page turning medley of southern fun – it may be a little dramatic and stereotypical, but it’s done openly and the novel invites you along for a wild ride! This book was a whole lot of fun, southern style! I really had fun with the characters and the storyline keeps you interested. You could just hear the southern drawl and laugh at the antics Francine gets into with her friends all because of Dwayne! Francine’s grandmother, Nanny Lou, is featured in this story and every time she opens her mouth, you know you’re in for a good time, as she’s funny and doesn’t mince words. After Francine gets arrested (twice!), she decides to go undercover with the help of her girlfriend, and they try to find out just what else Dwayne has been up to. Along the way, Dwayne disappears and Francine thinks the worst may have happened and she’s determined to save him, but only if she’s not too late! The mystery behind his disappearance added depth to this “grits lit” tale. I’m intrigued to see how Miles treats a more serious storyline and have put Cold Rock River on my wish list and I will definitely look for other novels in the Dwayne series as I have to learn more about Francine Harper and her crazy family. This book is a delight and a lot of fun. I’d also like to spend a moment talking about the book itself – it was fantastic new soft cover edition with front and end flaps that made it perfect for carrying notes, you could even use them as bookmarks and they helped to keep the book flat so that it maintained its shaped better, even after reading – I like this style and l hope that more books will have this feature.
