Abstract:

"What a change of scenery!" The 1959 World Series featured the NL Los Angeles Dodgers beating the AL Chicago White Sox, four games to two, in the first World Series games ever played on the West Coast. The 1963 Series matched two-time defending champions, the New York Yankees against the Dodgers, with the Dodgers sweeping the Series in four games to capture their second title in five years. In 1965, the Dodgers took on the Minnesota Twins, who had won their first pennant since 1933. It became the third Dodger title since their move to Los Angeles in 1958. In 1981, the Dodgers were in their third Series in five years. They won in six games for their first title since 1965, and their first victory over the Yankees since 1963. The 1988 Series matched the Dodgers against Oakland A's, with the Dodgers upsetting the heavily favored A's to win in five games, the opposite result of their 1974 meeting. The highlight came when injured Dodgers MVP Kirk Gibson, who could barely walk due to injuries suffered during the NLCS, hit a pinch-hit, walk-off home run off closer Dennis Eckersley in Game 1.
