Abstract:

The collection contains the personal papers of Doris Adelaide Derby from 1961-1992. The papers include organizational files, personal papers, subject files, teaching material, audiovisual material, photographs, and printed material. The majority of the organizational files consist of material related to the Poor People's Corporation and its affiliates, Liberty House and Southern Media. The collection also contains minutes, printed material, fliers, and brochures related to African Americans in the south, poverty, voter registration, and civil rights organizations such as Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Cooperative League Fund, Mississippi Freedom Project, and others. Derby's personal papers include correspondence, notebooks, and writings. Of considerable interest in the teaching materials are those related to the Child Development Group of Mississippi and the beginning of the Head Start program. The majority of the photographs depict various programs in which Derby was involved, but are not taken by Derby herself.
