Abstract:

Responding to claims by Mr. [James] Martineau that Chapman has "been allowing himself such unrestrained license of speech" against him, while he himself has "scrupulously refrained from the least attempt to vindicate myself or to hurt him [i.e. Chapman] in the opinion of friends" by relating his own accounts of letters and statements by Martineau to friends and colleagues concerning his financial management of the Westminster review which were clearly intended to discredit him and impugn his honesty as a man of business; with mention made of Mr. R. Kinder, Mr. J.E. Taylor, Mr. Froude, Mr. Greg, Mr. Newman, and Dr. Hodgson.
