Lyman Draper, dissatisfied with correspondence as the only means of collecting historical narratives, began to converse with Western pioneers and their descendents as early as 1841. According to historians, these dozens of interviews, conducted many years before mechanical recording devices, made Draper a pioneer in the field of oral history. Included also are transcriptions from state and county archives, newspapers, and personal manuscripts--recorded when original records could not be acquired.
