An analysis of improvisations by the late and great Tony Williams. Mr. Williams studied composition for at least 15 years and his studies molded the approach he took to improvisation at the drumset. This dissertation contains biographical info and nine transcriptions with analysis that highlight many standard compositional practices within Mr. Williams' improvisational style. The book also contains a selected discography of recording projects with Mr. Williams as a leader, an interview with his composition teacher, a bibliography of articles, books, and references to Tony Williams, and a discography of selected solo drumset improvisations by other musicians. I have been using these transcriptions with my students in recital and they provide a unique insight into one of the finest improvising composers of our time. Future plans are for a transcription book of solo drumset improvisations from Mr. Willams and others that are suitable for the recital hall.
