Abstract:

The Duke Endowment Archives spans the years 1902 to 1992, although the bulk of the material dates from 1925 through the 1990s. In accordance with a records retention schedule, materials will be regularly added to the Archives from the Duke Endowment offices. The collection consists of correspondence; minutes of meetings; financial records; applications for assistance from hospitals, child care institutions, and churches; statistics; publications; oral history tapes and transcripts; architectural drawings and blueprints; and miscellaneous records and papers. The collection documents the administration of the corpus of the trust and the charitable contributions made to the categories of recipients named in the Identure and Deed of Trust establishing The Duke Endowment.

The records are arranged to reflect the responsibilities and operations of the trustees, officers, and divisions of The Endowment. Subject areas represented in the collection include: the history of foundations, hospital and child care demographics and other statistics, rural church buildings and activities, the construction of Duke University, and the life of James Buchanan Duke. The geographic focus is primarily North Carolina and South Carolina.

Individuals represented in the collection include Horace Trumbauer, Watson Smith Rankin, Graham L. Davis, Frank W. Rounds, George Garland Allen, William R. Perkins, and Alexander H. Sands. Businesses include Olmstead Brothers and Duke Power Company.

The addition (23 February 2001)(21,000 items; dated 1955-1998) comprises records from the Rural Church Division series, arranged in the following subseries: Program Grants (1979-1995), Divinity School Grants (1979-1995), Superannuates (1981-1998), Hinton Rural Life Center (1959-1993), and Building Grants (1955-1992).

Addition (01-051)(5 items, dated 1995-1998) contains Trustees meeting minutes, volumes 71A & B (1998), and minutes of the trustees of the Fund Established by the Will of Nanaline H. Duke for Duke University, volume 10 (1995-1997). The volumes have updated indexes.

Addition (01-051)(5 items, dated 1998-1999) contains Trustees meeting minutes, volumes 72A & B (1999), and minutes of the trustees of the Doris Duke Trust (1998-1999), vol. 54. The volumes have updated indexes.

The addition (01-262) (4875 items, 7.8 linear feet; dated 1926-2001, bulk 1955-1997) contains Rural Church Division records. Primarily correspondence, plans, financial statements, and blueprints relating to the urban church building programs, including 70 black-and-white and 20 color photographs, and 10 black-and-white negatives. There is also correspondence regarding the Interpreter's House, the North Carolina and Western North Carolina conferences, and Duke Divinity School programs, as well as records for two committees.

The addition (02-233) (9825 items, 16.1 lin. ft.; dated [ca. 1924]-2001 and n.d.) consists primarily of accounting records, including vouchers, credit card receipts, and accounts payable invoices (1992-1996). Also includes printed material by or about The Duke Endowment, especially regarding anniversaries ([ca. 1929]-2001); office records, especially section reports and transcripts of slide presentations about The Duke Endowment (1969-1980); 14 color slides and one black-and-white photograph; and 6 audio cassettes.

The addition (02-240) (11 items, 13.50 lin. ft.; dated 1986-2000) comprises eleven financial ledgers.

Addition (02-254)(4 items, 1 lin. ft.; dated 2000) includes bound minutes for meetings of the trustees during 2000, volumes 73A to 73D, along with an index for these meetings.

Addition (03-192) (12 items, .2 lin. ft.; dated 1974-1999) includes invitations, stickers, and ribbon relating to the Endowment's 75th anniversary, 1999. Also includes a 50th anniversary book (1974) and a report from the Angier B. Duke Memorial, 1982.
