Beata Wittgenstein es una belleza judía joven que amor para un oficial de ejército francés te obliga a que desafíe a sus padres y abandone su fe. Ella cría a su hija, Amadea, como católico; cuando ella es un adolescente, Amadea toma votos para sentir bien a una monja de Carmelite. Pero, durante los años del tercer Reich, no igualar un convento puede ofrecer su santuario. Mientras que barren a la familia y a los amigos lejos sin rastro, Amadea retira en ocultar, ensamblando eventual la resistencia francesa.
