Abstract:

Inspired by medieval, classical and biblical themes, Edward Burne-Jones's paintings of graceful women, angels, gods and heroes, often in pensive or sad poses or asleep, are dreamlike, romantic and sentimental. One of the most successful of the late Victorian painters his art defined the 'dream world' of late nineteenth-century Aestheticism and the role of art as an alternative to the vulgar and disturbing world of the everyday. This study throws light on the inspiration and working practices of this romantic artist.
