Abstract:

Effective communication is one of the cornerstones of providing good health care, and is essential for the health professional to relate to patients, their families, and even each other so that accurate information is shared in a positive way. Describes different techniques that can be used to impart knowledge and facilitate learning, provide support to patient and family members when serious or life threatening illness or injury is diagnosed, and to help loved ones cope with unexpected death. Explains proxemics and the four types of distance used in interactions; Compares and contrasts "facilitating" and "leading"; Provides the six steps in Buckman's protocol for delivering bad news; Discusses in detail the death of a child and its impact on both family and stafff.
