Abstract:

As sexuality becomes increasingly casual and frequent in our society, it is important for the Christian community to respond to these cultural pressures in a biblically sound and practically helpful manner. While multiple programs target adolescents, few address parents' role in their children's sexual education and only one faith-based program was found. The current program was developed by Pastor Donald Williams in conjunction with Dr. Stanton Jones (co-author of How and When to Tell Your Kids About Sex), to fill the need for faith-based programs to educate parents as to how they improve their communication about sexuality with their children. How and When to Tell Your Kids About Sex was evaluated for its effectiveness in increasing the quality of parent-child general communication and increasing the quality and frequency of parent-child sexual communication. Pre- and post-questionnaires were completed by participants. No significant changes in communication were found as a result of participation in the program. This was likely due to its short length and lack of interactive activities between parents and children. Despite unsupported hypotheses, 100% of the participants indicated a greater comfort level in discussing sexuality upon completion of the seminar. Specific recommendations are provided for continued program development. Future research suggestions include providing more accurate and objective measures of parent-child communication, specifically in three methods: 1) measuring and comparing parent and child perceptions of communication, 2) observation of parent-child interaction in contrast to self-report measures, and 3) improving the content validity of measures of sexuality and parent-child communication.
