In the late 1800s, tribal lands in what is now southwestern Oklahoma were divided up and allotted to individual members of the tribes. The remaining "surplus" lands were later opened to non-Indian settlement. Two land offices were established -- one at El Reno and one at Fort Sill which was later moved to Lawton.
