Abstract:

Electronic texts are emerging as an important information source for the future. In the transitional phase from print to electonic formats it is critical to gain a better understanding of the functional and cognitive processes involved in the search for information in both formats. The purpose of this research is to gather data on index usage, first in a print environment, and then, with this knowledge as a foundation, to explore what functionalities are necessary to provide access to texts in an electronic environment.
