With apologies to the creator of Charlotte and Stuart Little, reading a style guide is not as engaging as reading a story or even literary commentary. But the addition of illustrations to The Elements of Style results in a very appealing volume. This edition uses the classic, well-known text and adds a wonderful visual element. Artist Maira Kalman has created whimsical, off-beat renderings of the illustrative phrases and concepts found in the text. Readers are guided by pictures which demonstrate the basic concepts on writing clearly, concisely and using the active voice to enliven a phrase. Potential authors can still consult The Elements of Style to learn how to “make every word count” and experience the text in a new way through Ms. Kalman’s bright, witty images. This new edition has one major drawback however; it no longer small enough to fit easily in a pocket. But this edition is still highly recommended for the visual author to carry in their urbane backpack.
