Abstract:

Twenty-one ALS, two AL, four AN dating from 1896 and 1897, and several fragments written by Eleonora Duse to the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio. The letters and notes document the romantic and working relationships between Duse and d'Annunzio, and other aspects of Duse's professional life. Subjects of letters include the play Sogno d'un Mattino di Primavera, which d'Annunzio was writing for Duse, and her rivalry with Sarah Bernhardt. Also included is one ALS dated June 26, 1895, written by Duse's husband Tebaldo Checchi to d'Annunzio protesting the author's plan to write a novel about Duse.
