Abstract:

Three account books of Jonathan Emerson (1784-1871) detailing his many farm and land dealings, the first covering 1837-1843 with diary entries in the front and Cash Accounts in the back, including a list of land dealings in Michigan; the second covering 1850 to 1853, in the same format; and the third, 1853-1858, mainly of cash accounts; together with twenty-two folders of letters, legal papers, and accounts, most of them relating directly to Jonathan Emerson's affairs. Other family members represented include Emerson's son, Cyrel Munroe Emerson (1817-1901) and his wife, Harriet Hosford Emerson; his brother, Allen Emerson (1783-1852); and his nephews Cyrus Crocker Emerson (b. 1816) and Jonathan E. Fletcher (1806-1872). Fletcher went west to Bloomington, Iowa, and acted as agent for his uncle in land speculations. Topics include the Gilbert's Bridge Company.
