Abstract:

Empowerment has stood the traditional top-down business model on its head, placing decision-making power in the hands of the rank-and-file employee. Using examples drawn from McDonald's, Land Rover, HarperCollins Publishers, a telephone banking service, and a natural food wholesaler, this program examines the value of empowerment and explores how it is put into practice in the U.K. Issues such as teamwork, motivation, performance monitoring, and the limits of empowerment are addressed, underscoring the ongoing need to temper managerial control with employee independence in order to achieve a company's strategic goals.
