Benjamin Church; Thomas Church; Ezra Stiles
|Opmerkingen:||"The life of Colonel Church [by Ezra Stiles]": p. 195-198. Dr. Stiles practically edited the book. See extracts from his diary, cited in Dexter's ed. of Church, Boston, 1865, p. ix.
"It was ever my intent ... that the many and repeated favours of God to myself ... might be published for generations to come. And now my great age requiring my dismission from service in the militia ... and having my minutes by me, my son [i.e. Thomas Church] has taken the care and pains to collect from them the ensuing narrative ..."--Benjamin Church, To the reader, p. iv.
The frontispiece "Col. Benjamin Church. P. Revere sc." is a copy of a portrait of the poet, Charles Churchill, published in the "Court miscellany and Gentlemen and ladies' magazine", Sept. 1768. Revere has placed a powderhorn around the neck, and the features have suffered somewhat through his handling. See the photographic reproductions of the above mentioned portrait of Churchill and of Revere's plate, in Mass. Hist. Soc. Proceedings, 1881-82, v. 19, p. 243-245, with remarks by Charles Deane.
The first edition, entitled "Entertaining passages relating to Philip's war ..." Boston, 1716, is without illustrations.
