Abstract:

In recent years Germanists have paid more and more attention to exile literature. Erich Fried: A Writer Without a Country examines the life and work of the Austrian-born writer Erich Fried (1921-1988). It is concerned principally, although not exclusively, with the earlier period in the writer's career, which has hitherto received less attention from critics and scholars.

This work provides a critical literary and biographical assessment of Fried's existence in exile in Great Britain and adds to the growing scholarly examination of German exile literature.
