Abstract:

The Ernest Hemingway collection consists mainly of serials that include stories and nonfiction written by and about Hemingway. There is some original correspondence from Hemingway and correspondence relating to him written by Carlos Baker, Oscar Collier, Patsy English, Ralph Graves, Will Lang, William C. Pank, Susan Richman, Edward K. Thompson, and two of his wives (Pauline Pfeiffer and Mary Welsh). The two largest groupings of correspondence include those exchanged between Hemingway and Arthur Mizener (with Hemingway's opinion of F. Scott Fitzgerald) and Hemingway's letters to editor Edward O'Brien. In addition, there are manuscripts and proofs of Hemingway's work and biographies of Hemingway. This collection also includes woodcuts by Helmut Ackermann and press releases, posters, and other materials relating to movie adaptations of Hemingway's works. The collection spans the period from 1916 to 1977, with the bulk falling between 1930 and 1965.
