Abstract:

Ernie Wolff gives the chronological history of mining in Alaska, mostly concentrating on gold mining. Wolff begins his history with Russians in Alaska, then traces gold and other mineral discoveries large and small throughout the entire state and northwest Canada, making a point that the real start of Interior Alaska history followed the Klondike stampede. He touches upon numerous explorers, prospectors, and businessmen, including Harper and McQuesten, Joe Juneau and Richard Harris, Howard Franklin, Pitka and Ceresco, Carmack, the Three Swedes, the Lucky Six, Felix Pedro, Charlie Strandberg, John Murphy, Frank Yasuda and Carter, an explorer named Marsh, Norman Steins, and Carl Whittam. Following his lecture he takes questions from the audience.
