Abstract:

""Eruera" arises from the determination of the late Eruera Stirling of Te Whanau-a-Apanui to pass on the traditional Maori knowledge entrusted to him in his childhood by Maori elders. Speaking to Anne Salmond, he ranges widely over his boyhood in the Bay of Plenty in the era of whaling, maize cropping and kumara growing. He discusses in detail concepts such as mana, tapu, matauranga and whakapapa, and explains the customs of rahui, taua and haka. In his later years, living with his wife Amiria in Auckland's Herne Bay, Eruera was a much respected figure in the Maori community."--Back cover.
