Abstract:

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence with William S. Heckscher, an American cultural historian who studied with Panofsky and became his assistant in 1932. Panofsky and Heckscher worked together at the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton, and corresponded quite extensivly about their work, especially from the period 1952 to 1968. The collection includes letters from Panofsky to the German editor and author Franz Schoenberner.

Series I. Letters to Franz Schoenberner discuss Panofsky's progress on current writing projects about Dante and Goethe (1914). Other letters concern travel plans, personal health and activities. Includes a sonnet entitled "Berliner Frühlings-Sonnett" (1914), and one of the letters is written in Latin (1914). Arranged chronologically.

Series II. Correspondence with William S. Heckscher, 1933-1968. The series consists of ca. 160 letters from Panofsky to Heckscher, 70 letters from Heckscher to Panofsky, and ca. 36 letters from other individuals to Heckscher regarding Panofsky. Some of the subjects discussed include music, educational philosophy, the College Art Association, the Vallicelliana Library, Sherlock Holmes, and colleagues (inc. Egon Verheyen, Richard Salomon, Lotte Brand Philip, Pierre Jean Vinken, Carl Nordenfolk, and Phyllis Bober). Also included are copies of the correspondence between Panofsky and Leo Spitzer, 1950-1956 (folder 29), and 19 letters to Heckscher about Panofsky from their mutual friends, 1968 (inc. Roger Adolf d'Hulst, Erik Sjöqvist, Jan Bialostocki, Rensselaer W. Lee, Edward Elias Lowinsky, Hanns Swarzenski, Martin Davies, and Louis V. Randall (folder 27). Arranged chronologically.
