Abstract:

Michael Elmore was born in an undisclosed (to us) location, we are pretty sure in Missouri. He attended an undisclosed (to us) college or university in California where he majored in something. He went on to earn his MLS at Simmons College in Boston.

He served at Northeastern University as serials cataloger when serials cataloging was a serious thing and no one but him wanted much to do with it. It's possible, but has never been proven, that Elmore and colleague Toby Bernstein, in a misguided attempt to paint the metal heating unit in their office, made a big old gnarly mess. Despite that, Elmore is reported to have been "a wonderful colleague and well-liked and respected by everyone at NU."

Elmore's next stop on the serials cataloging train was NYU, where he is described by former Associate Dean Nancy Kranich as "the best serials cataloger ever" for his ability to "navigate really difficult waters and explain them to us luddites." Apparently Elmore once identified as a non-Luddite. Mostly Elmore was known at NYU as a dancer. Long-time bestie Marsha Clark specifically refers to his having "disco danced." Kranich chimes in that she and Michael both danced at staff holiday parties but claims that whether or not she and Elmore danced *together* is unclear.

In 1986 Elmore left NYU, and apparently staff holiday party dancing, behind and joined the staff at the Barnard College Library. While he was stingy with his dance moves at Barnard, he contributed substantially to the institution, implementing the library's transition from the Dewey Decimal to the Library of Congress Classification System and launching a collection of LGBTQ YA fiction.
