Woodcut image of Christ on the cross surrounded by Mary and John, with Mary Magdalene kneeling at his feet. The letters INRI at the head of the cross are inverted.
Interpretation of the book of Lamentations by the medieval Franciscan scholar Nicholas of Lyra, arranged by the Spanish bishop and humanist Pedro Nuñez Delgado. Nicholas cautioned against extreme allegorical interpretations of scripture, insisting on the primacy of the literal sense of scripture. He made use of Jewish interpretations of scripture, including rabbinic readings or the works of Rashi.
