Martin Luther King, Jr. expands his influence within the rapidly fragmenting civil rights movement, opposes the war in Vietnam and launches through his Southern Christian Leadership Conference a program called the Poor People's Campaign. Finally, he is assassinated in Memphis, bringing to an end a major stream of the movement.
