Abstract:

John Green's reminiscences open with an account of his family history and childhood as a free African American in New Bern, NC. In 1857, his family moved to Cleveland and he began to attend school in earnest, eventually finishing high school and then studying law at Union Law College. After a short sojourn in South Carolina, where he first entered Republican politics, he returned to Cleveland. There, over many years, he practiced law and assumed political office, first as a justice of the peace, then as a member of the Ohio General Assembly where he eventually became the first black senator. Included throughout the book are descriptions of many of his clients and cases, his European travels, and letters and anecdotes testifying to the many prominent people he met during his long career.
