Abstract:

In ancient times it was a person's deeds which could potentially translate into fame. The advent of portraiture, photography, and motion pictures changed all that - shifting the focus of public adoration to the face and rendering the concept of faceless celebrity meaningless. This program accompanies Monty Python legend John Cleese as he examines the psychological allure of famous faces and the pitfalls of equating achievement with stardom and good looks. Cleese meets with actor Pierce Brosnan, Oscar-winning screenwriter William Goldman, a Hollywood casting director, and obscure performers who yearn for the media spotlight - drawing upon all of them for insight into the relationship between facial appearance and the 21st-century version of success.
