The collection contains correspondence, business records, financial records, printed material, photographs, and art work accumulated by the William Hayden English family. Correspondence includes letters concerning Indiana and national politics and love letters from young women to William Hayden English. Other letters concern construction of the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument and business affairs of the Hite and Bowman families. Business records include documents related to the English Hotel and Opera House, the First National Bank, the Citizens' Street Railway Company and real estate in Marion and Scott counties. Material related to the English's personal interests include official documents of Indiana governors (including William Henry Harrison), photographs of legislators, and cartes de visite photographs of theater performers, including John Wilkes Booth. English family photographs include portraits, family homes, and the English Hotel and Opera House. Art works include drawings by Will Vawter concerning Indiana wars and family life in the Old Northwest.
