OCLC Number: 663150859
Notes: Date range based on style of drawing.
Artist: Although labeled as the work of Stothard, drawing lacks the skill and control one would expect to find in a Stothard drawing. The companion piece illustrating the comedies derives many of its figures from engravings of Stothard's designs, however this does not appear to be true of the tragedies piece. The artist attribution was probably attached by the bookseller. Drawing is however in the fashion of Stothard and his followers.
Drawing is glued solidly to a backing, mounted with a similar watercolor illustrating characters from the comedies. In pencil on Folger copy, lower right corner of mount: "Famous characters from Shakespeare by T. Stothard R.A." Unsigned.
Provenance: Purchased as part of a collection of 122 watercolors of Shakespearean scenes, from a private owner by "Sabin" ca. 1898, and sold to the Folgers by Gabriel Wells, April 28, 1920. Most of the items in the collection were attributed to John Masey Wright. (Formerly ART Inv. 289 no. 116 - cs. 889).
Subject: Pictured from left to right are: two older men, one holding a dagger; Lear bent over Cordelia's lap; three women; Ophelia and Hamlet; Lady Macbeth ; and Macbeth and the witches.
