This book contains 20 essays on local gazetteers (local histories) and their compilation, an afterword by the author, and an appendix. The essays are titled: 1. "Historiography and the study of local gazetteers"; 2. "Miscellaneous discussions of history and gazetteers"; 3. "Speaking of gazetteers"; 4. "After reading 'Tongzhi Tiaoyi'" [by Wang, Baoxin (Wang Pao-xin, 1867-1944) published in 1957]; 5. "Local literature and Chinese culture"; 6. "The rejuvenation of Chinese culture and the task of Taiwanese literature";  7. "On the possibility of completely recompiling gazetteers"; 8. "The task of literature at present"; 9. "Tentative discussions on the hypothesized tables of contents for county and city gazetteers"; 10. "Clarifying the stylistic rules and layout for the [Taiwan] provincial gazetteer"; 11. "Regarding the recompilation of the Taiwan Gazetteer from the point of view of the Penghu Tingzhi [the Penghu Prefecture Gazetteer]"; 12. "The compilation of the Taiwan Gazetteer"; 13. "The life of He Qiaoyuan [He Ch'iao-yuan, 1558 - 1632] and the Taiwan Gazetteer";  14. "Errors in the argument that the Taiwan Gazetteer was revised six times"; 15. "An initial investigation of  the 'Comprehensive History of Taiwan' [by Lian, Heng (Lian Yatang,1878-1936]; 16. " The process of proofreading the Taiwan Gazetteer"; 17. "Jiang Shizhe [Chiang Shih-che] and the Taiwan Gazetteer"; 18. "Gazetteer studies after the recovery of Taiwan"; 19. "The special characteristics of the Weiyuan Gazetteer [Weiyuan is a county in Sichuan Province] "The collection and compilation of family genealogies".

The appendix contains the prefaces from seven gazetteers, and an essay titled "The biography of Huang Kaiji [Huang K'ai-chi] and the Taiwan Gazetteer.
