Whatever one's response to individual sequences, Disney's venture into marrying high and popular culture remains a milestone for animated film, an impressive mix of bold experiment (Toccata and Fugue in D minor and the Nutcracker Suite), a Silly Symphony which was the film's origin (The Sorcerer's Apprentice), Disney didacticism (The Rite of Spring and the finale Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria), a clever burlesque of high culture (Dance of the Hours) and an exercise in kitsch (The Pastoral Symphony). Each sequence was realized by a separate production team under Disney's overall supervision. Fantasia is also notable for pioneering use of the multiplane camera in animation.
