Abstract:

A concert of classical music given an animated interpretation. Deems Taylor introduces the various compositions. Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra play Bach's Toccata in D minor to the visual accompaniment of non-narrative imagery. Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker suite presents a ballet of nature with images of fairies and dancing plants and animals. Dukas' Sorcerer's apprentice shows Micky Mouse with out of control magic. Stravinsky's Rites of spring features the creation of the world through the end of the dinosaurs. Beethoven's Pastoral symphony is illustrated by mythological Greek beings preparing a bacchanalia. Ponchielli's Dance of the hours presents cartoon animals dancing the ballet. Moussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain features evil spirits and demons in a dark night of celebration. At dawn shadowy figures bearing lighted candles illustrate Schubert's Ave Maria. Followed by Fantasia: the making of a masterpiece, and the original 1941 theatrical trailer.
