In this first cinematic adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's famous 1930 novel about love in the midst of World War I, the star-crossed lovers are a beautiful English nurse named Catherine Barkley and American Frederick Henry, an ambulance driver in the Italian Army. Their relationship gets off to a rocky start, but eventually they become inseparable, pledging their love for one another and marrying secretly. Frederick's jealous friend Major Rinaldi schemes to break them apart, using his influence to have Catherine sent away and intercepting her letters to Frederick. The two share a love strong enough to overcome anything--except for the one thing that no love, no matter how powerful, can overcome.
