In this 2008 Newbery Honor book, Jacqueline Woodson tells the story of 11-year-old Frannie who is growing up amidst the social changes of the 1970s. She has a loving and supportive family to provide guidance, but she questions where hope comes from when there are so many problems in the world, including her mother's miscarriages, her brother's deafness, and the mysterious boy at school who everyone shuns. Racial tensions and religious questions are discussed in a thought-provoking manner which invites discussion. This is a touching story of hope, faith, and growing up told an honest voice that is appropriate for 9-12 year old readers.
