Abstract:

A bourgeois family escapes the noise and crowding of Berlin for a summer in the country. Laura, Paul, and their children are joining Laura's mother Anna, her stepfather Robert, her half-brother Max, and her younger sister Sophie, who has been distant for years and arrives unexpectedly. Laura and Paul's marriage is in crisis, Anna's mother is dying, and Max spends all his time with his girlfriend. The shifting constellations of the family are revealed in individual conversations and encounters. The tragic irony is, of course, the incongruity between the stability of each character's identity in their own mind and the constantly changing roles each actually inhabits.
