Bill Pronzini is at his very best with Fever; as spellbinding as Shackles (published in 1988), and as unpredictable a conclusion with the much later Mourners (2006). Before the first page is turned, you’ll wonder why Janice Krochek runs away, why her husband continues to hire detectives to find her, and why she is compelled to return to him. As soon as you’re engrossed in the Krochek situation, Pronzini spins you around with Nameless’ investigation into Brian Youngblood’s reclusive behavior and why he is lying to his mother about his finances. If you are not familiar with this long running series, Nameless’ true name remained unspoken for several decades. Only recently, his name was mentioned aloud (not revealed here!) with little fanfare; the series remains fresh despite that little mystery unraveled. The two story lines have seemingly nothing in common except for the detectives doing the investigating. By book’s end, you are as stunned and disgusted with human vices and behavior as Nameless and his colleagues are. The ending is shocking and you don’t see it coming. This is a very well written and fast-paced mystery, with interesting characters and protagonists. I look forward to Nameless’ next cases.
